Acupuncture & Weight Loss

I am frequently asked about Acupuncture for weight loss. A recent study and the holiday push to slim down for the New Year suggests the need for answers.

Acupuncture, like many weight loss therapies, does not and cannot work alone for weight loss. Proper exercise, portion control and careful food choices are key components to your weight loss goals. As I often tell my patients, if Acupuncture were a sole solution to this problem, the world would know and we would have lines forming outside of our offices! Don’t be misled by claims saying otherwise, the handwork is still necessary.  So why add Acupuncture if you still have to do all of the hard stuff? Here is what Acupuncture is good for:

  1. Speeds up Metabolism – A healthy metabolism is an important aspect to ensure that your food is being used properly and that you are getting the most out of all of your calorie burning exercises.
  2. Reduces Water Retention – Stimulating circulation allows your body to process the water it needs and get rid of what it doesn’t.
  3. Promotes Sleep – A good night’s sleep is crucial for your adrenal glands. Strong, healthy adrenal glands will keep your metabolism burning and give you the energy you need to hit the gym after work.
  4. Promotes Healthy Digestion – A healthy, well-balanced digestive system allows the body to break down and absorb food correctly, allowing you to get all of the nutrients from you food so you feel full for longer.
  5. Stimulates Detox – By stimulating cellular metabolism, healthy detoxification of cells can occur.
  6. Reduces Cravings – The outer ear represents specific brain function. By stimulating certain areas on the ear, Acupuncture will help to change specific behaviors – especially those triggered by stress and habit.
  7. Lower Cortisol Levels – Cortisol is the hormone in our body that responds to stress and can contribute to the accumulation of belly fat.
